Artist Review #11(San Holo)

Where's #10?

How did I never notice this.

Okay anyway, it's been 11 months since we've done one, so let's go in with a new artist that will probably stick: San Holo

San Holo has high quality tracks that are melodic. They aren't featured in NCS

You can tell his popularity through the 134,757,205 plays.

The begin comes with vocals setting the tone and mood of the song followed by a hollow synth stutter loop. Then the melody is focused on the vocalist, and the transitions through loop and the build up has amazing quality. The fades are perfect, and now the familiar beginning tune rocks back.

The beat drop begins with "I just wanna see the light" repeated. It's a light yet noticeable beat drop. Typical

The synth break is the melody put on an organ synth, with a great bass line and transitions. Man this guy can position the transitions so nicely.

The transition from the synth break to verse #2 is just San Holo messing around with synths, breaking them apart and changing them. It's a great idea that definitely achieves greatness. The tick in the background fits and it's just a fun part to listen to.

The verse repeated with a laser shifting pitches, and falsetto settles to lead it into a beat drop. The synth break could use some stutters, but is definitely solid. It's a great backdrop.

The autotune and synth voice enhancers are what make the melody strive, and I'd say that the transitions structure this amazing melodic piece.

We Rise – San Holo

San Holo goes in with the melody nice and strong with nice pitches. I love the effects of failure during the final notes. Weva, weva wayfo is amazing and it just proves that San Holo can make melody.

This song is similar to Light, with sections like

melody teaser-verse-beat drop prepare-beat drop-synth break-transition-verse

in that order. It's noticeable.

The beat drop gives us a whole new melody that I personally love. The synth chosen to display is perfect, and the melody going up is just incredibly fitting for the beat drop, which goes into the synth break. It portrays a segments of sadness.

Then the original melody is back, going nice and strong with background stutters.

There's a fade and echo before it goes into a focused tone of perseverance. Nice melody and fade into the original melody.

San Holo recognizes that thsi melody is great, so he puts it out nice and strong.

The similar lead ins are back, and San Holo repeats sections in a different order to keep it fresh, yet the melody is still giong on.

The ending has a nice whistle to it, and a reverse build up ends with a no-fade beat.

Lines of the Broken – San Holo

Believe it or not, I have never listened to this song.

It's their third most popular, so I'm excited.

FIRST THOUGHTS

  • interesting bells
  • nice shift
  • weird background spring synth
  • nice vocals i guess
  • quiet
  • expecting a fade
  • nice sudden stop
  • wth that sounds like some andrew huang thing rubber duck
  • another sudden stop
  • interesting synth break
  • just a whole new edm genre
  • woah wth xD bounce bell synth
  • just confused at the whole types of melody
  • nice lead in. yes that's the san holo i was looking for
  • we're only halfway into the song?
  • nice blend
  • oh yes build up and intense panning
  • Ok it's back

I don't want to listen to this song again. It's a quiet song that I can understand why other people would like, but just not my type. I could tell that there was effort into this song. I just like the tunes and the happiness.

Since that was a trash review and stuff, let's do one more.

nice

San Holo teases again, and with a sudden solo everything comes in with no build up. I like this style.

The loop is unexpectedly repeated a time. Sofia's vocals are intense yet speak. A jazz vibe comes in with soothing synths. Then with just one line the lead in comes in.

A bounce, stutter synth comes in. I definitely like this style. A clap joins in that speeds up to eventually form beat drop. San Holo overuses the solo for a second into chaos.

The synth break mashes together after a drop. The vocals have a lower pitch added for enhancing purposes, and the stutter synth comes back.

After the synth break, a digital flat synth is used to replace the original synth to bring a fresh look. The song ends with a calm fade and guitar. Solid.

Comments

  1. I don't think I've listened to the last two.
The first two are similar in style, as you pointed out. So I guess San Holo went farther with experimentation with the newer songs, which are chill and higher energy (in that order). yee
