BIG music and EDM update!

Hi guys, last time I made a music update or like a playlist review was serious ages ago. There's this huge gap of music that I haven't like written out on this blog, and it's pretty big, like 2 years long or something.

SO I can't cover like everything, and it's definitely very overwhelming to try.

So I'm just going to try to sink into a writers block and whip out some bullet points of some great music I've been listening to in the past year or so.

  • Notable Artists
    • I'm gonna begin by just namedropping a whole list of artists I've been attracted to. Artists that I won't mention in this blog post
    • jeonghyeon, Wave Racer, Zedd, Bad Computer, NOTD, Asher Postman, Stessie, ellis, AIKA, Hyper Potions, MYLK, Aiobahn, SGNLS, Daniel Levi, Infowler, skybreak, MILES, Trivecta, Prince Wood, RetroVision, Vicetone, Kavinsky, Tokyo Machine, Man Club, Ezra Hazard, INZO, Seven Lions, Flay!, Airuei, duumu, bxchii, ROY KNOX, Panda Eyes, KOTONOHOUSE, Half an Orange, Nitro Fun, The Chainsmokers, Syn Cole, JVNA, Netrum, Halvorsen, Fox Stevenson, Tritonal, Chime, Polyphia, PLEEG
  • Coco Moon
    • Pretty much one of the first things that come to mind when I'm trying to define my music taste recently. I mentioned this in my flurry of new music post in March 2023. This was before the album came out, and MAN this album is SO GOOD. His last album before this was Cinematic in 2018 and it was pretty underwhelming. There were like 2 songs in there that were good and the rest were pretty boring country songs.
    • In Coco Moon Owl City brings back his synths and electronics greatly, along with just a more general focus on the instrumentals too with guitars, more impulsive drums, and even in some cases extravagant unique instruments. His first three singles I literally ALL liked and it was a great sign for the rest of the album.
    • here's a short ranking of songs I like (from least like to most like)
      • The Meadow Lark
      • Under the Circus Lights
      • Kelly Time
      • Field Notes
      • Adam, Check Please
      • Vitamin Sea
      • The Tornado
      • Dinosaur Park
      • Learn How to Surf
    • There's so much to talk about. That list of songs I liked are just so good man. So much storytelling. I've never seen Adam Young scream like this before. So much emotion and so much urgency. It really elevates the atmosphere of that dark chorus in "The Tornado". The entire song is such a simple story yet so captivating. It's something only Adam Young can capture.
    • Then there's those synth or guitar solos like in "Vitamin Sea", "Adam, Check Please", and notably "Field Notes". That synth emergence and hang is just so beautiful. What an entrance.
    • But my favorite song out of the album by a long shot is "Learn How to Surf." It's just a joyous, melodic, easy track with straight up top-tier synth solos, vocals, lyrics, drums, and shaping. You seriously can't listen to this song without smiling, it's contagious. The structure and story and imagery of the song is so simple man and it's such a carefree track. I love it so much man its so melodic. The drop is FIRE and the solos are so good. The bridge is so good too. It's truly a masterpiece of a song, I'm so glad this song is in the album because man it's such a top-tier song bro. Owl CIty was COOKING. I remember seeing this teaser before the album came out: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/laQRuRJg_bg and MAN IM GETTING CHILLS RESLISTENING TO THIS. But when I heard "Learn How to Surf" on that teaser I just knew that that was going to be one of my favorite songs. That melody is just so memorable. AN AMAZING ALBUM, I COULDN'T GO TO YOUR TOUR WHICH IS SAD, I PROBABLY COULD'VE IF I REALLY TRIED TO, BUT IM LAZY, BUT ANYWAY I LOVE YOU OWL CITY THANK YOU
  • Nurture and Good Faith, Porter and Madeon.
    • So um I took a long time writing about Coco Moon even tho I could've written more. Anyway let's move on to this Nurture and Good Faith
    • I'll mention this briefly. Because I plan on making a blog post called "Revisiting Nurture." But man I have to say that these two albums are so incredible. They're euphoric, they're sentimental, they're triumphant, and they're so meaningful. It's just golden music. I really delved into these two albums in the past 2 years, and I still listen to them so much and there's no signs this will ever stop.
    • Just going on bike rides while listening to Nurture, singing the lyrics out loud for the sky to hear, for the breeze to hear. It feels like I can bike anywhere I want when Musician is playing besides me on the bike. I remember the whole last 2 weeks of high school I biked to school because I love biking and I wish I started earlier. But just listening to No Fear No more or Miracle or Musician or Be Fine on my way home from school biking through those neighborhoods man...it just felt so liberating. It's just such an emotional side of me that music has managed to envelope.
    • There's tons of people on the train with me when it comes to Porter and Madeon, I was just late to it. I listened to Shelter and Something Comforting pretty much when they were released, but never really like dove into Porter's discography.
    • There's so many incredible remixes of these tracks too:
    • And also:
    • Listening to Nurture and Madeon make me feel like I can't live without it.
  • EXISTENTIAL DANCE MUSIC - San Holo
    • Moving on, San Holo's recent album EXISTENTIAL DANCE MUSIC released in September 2023 has some gems in it. Some parts feel a bit repetitive, but its definitely a better album than the one before htis, BB U OK? in 2021. Here are three tracks that's in my rotation:

  • "High Enough" - Grant, Will Jay

    • I wish I could do more just singular tracks, but that would involve some recency bias tbh, cuz I'm always the most hooked to a song when I've listened to it on a relatively short stint. In other words, the more I listen to a song, the more I get tired of it IN GENERAL.
    • But yeah "High Enough" was released in August 2023 and it's such a fire monstercat track. We got Will Jay with some pretty fire vocals, hes the guy that went on 中国好声音 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T4yv3ofaHE
    • And it's just such a unique upbeat track with crazy synths and instrumentals. Grant has always been very "synth-y" and this is the best of his work, which is held to a really high standard. Grant has some really crazy high quality tracks man, and "High Enough" just solidified this. I had to mention this track because it's just so innovative and 'flourishing' if I were to describe it. The second verse can pretty much be put as a chorus, that's how fire that second verse is MAN.
  • Skrillex double album drop
    • Quest for Fire and Don't Get Too Close

    • Skrillex released two albums on Feb 17 and 18, 2023 after a long break from producing. I didn't listen to them fully until like a couple months later because I was too lazy lmao but I did mention it in my flurry of new music post in March 2023.
    • These two albums definitely didn't disappoint. There were lots of songs and cool collabs that I added to my rotation. Skrillex sound design and synths are so unique and bold.
    • Quick ranking of songs from the two albums (least like to most like):
      • Good Space - Skrillex, Starrah [QFF]
      • Summertime - Skrillex, Kid Cudi [DGTC]
      • Rumble - Fred again.., Flowdan [QFF]
      • Hydrate - Flowdan, BEAM, PEEKABOO [QFF]
      • Don't Go - Justin Bieber, Don Toliver [DGTC]
      • RATATA - Missy Elliot, Mr. Oizo [QFF]
      • Real Spring - Skrillex, Bladee [DGTC]
      • Way Back - Skrillex, PinkPantheress, Trippie Redd [DGTC]
    • As you can I see I did enjoy DGTC (Don't Get Too Close) more than QFF (Quest for Fire). "Way Back" with Pink Pantheress was SUPER FIRE, the first time I listened to this song I literally had to get out of my chair and go "WHOOOOOOO." That's how hype her entrance is. She BODIED that verse. I wish the song wasn't so short.
    •  But yea these two albums def did make its marks in my oc(REVIVED) playlists. Love skrillex, love his producing, love his structures, and love his music.
  • Bizarrap
    • I'm going to be VERY conservative here, because I need to make a separate blog post dedicated to Bizarrap. But Bizarrap is an Argentine producer who makes EDM rap beats, if I were to characterize him. His discography is collabing with Latin-American rappers and singers, where he has 50+ "Music Sessions" with artists such as Shakira, Eladio Carron, Peso Pluma, Rauw Alejandro. Tons of big names.
    • And this is about how much more I have to say about him because I want to save the rest for the separate biza blog post. Here's all the songs that I've added to my rotation:
    • Biza never misses. I WANT TO TALK SO MUCH ABOUT BIZARRAP BUT I HAVE TO DO IT IN ANOTHER BLOGPOST IM SORRY

Anyway, that's all the major 'movements' of music that have made an impact in my rotation. EDM isn't slowing down one bit. I love EDM. I still check up on all the NCS releases once a month, NCS is still pretty goated, though I like Monstercat more at this point lol.

I prob missed like 1 or 2 things, but I'm happy I got these things down at least. Very productive blog post!!
